Like the hedgehog itself, the hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus engelmannii) is covered in spiky “quills.” In addition to its spines, a clump of the prickly plant gives the impression of an oversized hedgehog. Hedgehog cacti require full sun to thrive. As with most cacti species, it is essential to handle the hedgehog cactus with care to avoid getting pricked by its many spines. The hedgehog cactus is one of the cactus varieties that features bright-colored flowers.
This cactus is a light-loving plant and should be placed in a spot that receives plenty of sunlight, such as a western-facing window. This hairy and spiny variety is best kept on the drier side, even in summer, because they are susceptible to overwatering. Overwatering can lead to crown and root rot – especially in the winter months. Watering every two weeks is a good rule of thumb . During the summer months, a regular dose of diluted cactus fertiliser will help the plant thrive.
